Author interview with Kay Jaybee

Interview with Kay Jaybee
Q. What was your childhood ambition?
Rather predictably, I always wanted to write and have a book published. I still can’t believe it’s happened!! My first solo work, The Collector (Austin & Macauley, 2008), has been out for 18 months now, and I’ve just had 2 e-books published by Xcite (Quick Kink 1 and Quick Kink 2). I get a massive high out of getting my work is in print, whether it’s an individual story, a poem or entire book. I really hope I never lose that buzz.

Q. What ambitions do you still have?

Writing erotica is my first love, and I’d love to have a complete erotic novel published alongside my anthologies. It would also be fantastic to have some of my children’s stories or general fiction published.

Q. What was your first job?

I’ve had a huge number of jobs over the years, from archaeologist, to a seller of posh cheese; to a lecturer of Medieval Criminology, a library assistant, a shop manager, and a debt collector… My first job was at the tender age of 15, when I worked in a poky little factory making Welsh Hats for the tourist trade.  Every day I had to throw black felt into a vat of emulsion glue, stir it with a stick, then pull out each piece, and squeeze it threw a mangle (I’m not making this up), before hanging it onto a rack to dry out, so it could be heated to shape. My last task of the day was to put ‘Made in Wales’ stickers on the finished hats – an innocent enough job, except I wasn’t living anywhere near Wales at the time!

Q. How did you end up being an erotic writer?

The few people that know that I write erotica always ask this question, and I’m never really sure how to answer it, because it sort of happened by accident. I remember sitting in a cafe one day scribbling some ideas for a story down on a paper napkin. I’d always disliked the poor quality of the erotic stories in the porn magazines that knocked around the house when I was student, and a friend challenged me at the time to see if I could do better. Something about my mood over coffee that day must have sparked my imagination, for the ideas haven’t stopped coming since (if you’ll excuse the pun!)

Q. What does your working day typically consist of?

I have three different jobs, so every day is divided up into short bursts of activity. I write every morning for at least 2 hours, sat in one of the various cafe’s in my local town, before heading home to be either an admin clerk or a business assistant for another 2 hours, before returning to my writing to edit what I’d written that morning for a further hour. Then it’s time to turn back into ‘Mum’ and pick the kids up from school. Once my tribe are asleep, I try and deal with all my own admin, web site updates etc.

Q. And what aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?

I love the variety of my day, and the fact that I am lucky enough to have the freedom to choose my own hours, all of which I work from home or local coffee shops. The best bit though, has to be the very necessary coffee breaks I have with friends; those oh-so essential chances to recharge the imagination.

Q. How do people who don’t know you react when you tell them you’re an erotic author?

I just adore that quick look of uncertainty that flashes across peoples faces – that “are you winding me up, or are you telling the truth” look. Sometimes I just leave them wondering.

Q. How do you like to relax when you’re not at work?

I’m always working. I haven’t a clue how I’d relax!

Q. What subject do you know more about than anyone else?

For a while in the late 90’s, I knew as much as anyone possibly can about Robin Hood, medieval criminology, and medieval ballad literature! Honestly!

Q. What’s the best thing that has happened to you in the last 12 months?

Writing wise I’ve had a cracking twelve months, with several short stories (both in hard copy anthologies and on the web site www.oystersandchocolate.com ), and two e-books (Quick Kink One and Quick Kink Two; pub by Xcite) published.

Outside of work I’ve made many new friends, including an amazing artist, who is great fun, always encouraging, has this amazing knack of cheering me up when I’m down in the dumps, and enjoys having as many coffee breaks as I do.

Q. Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us?

Someone once tried to kidnap me, I’ve been threatened with a knife and a gun, and I have totally given up hope of going abroad without being involved in some sort of ‘incident.’

  1. I always enjoy talking erotica with you, Kay, but now I see we must talk cheese sometime as well! Mind you, I’ve never been a cheese professional … but cheeses, collectively, rank very high on my list of favorite things in life.

  2. Kay is one of our most favorite writers! We love her naughty mind. Kay, you’ll do well to stay away from the States — we might just have to kidnap you ourselves!

  3. Okay, I’m guessing that the knife and gun threats were associated with your debt collector days, unless you were some sort of Indiana Jones type archaeologist? Hmmm, but maybe it could also have been the angry Welsh coming over the border to reclaim their hats, which would then tie in the kidnapping as well… Anyway, you can’t complain that life is dull, Kay. Thanks for the entertaining interview.

  4. Thanks guys – I had huge fun writing the answers to the interview questions -

Jeremy- I love talking erotica with you too honey – and if you ever want to talk cheese (even rank cheese) then I’m your gal!

Jordan and Sam – Without you guys I wouldn’t be here doing this- so huge thanks for always supporting me, and all your kind thoughts and comments over the years (years!! Good grief!!)

Kat – You’re so right – my life is never dull! It was an Indiana Jones style archaeology thing when I was almost kidnapped. Strange but true! Debt collecting was dull by comparision to my years as an archaeologist! – Oh, and I always wear a disguise if I cross into Wales, just in case…
