Author Interview with Victoria Blisse
Interview with Victoria Blisse
Q. How did you end up being an erotic writer?
A good question if ever I’ve read one. I’ve always loved writing. I’ve been a little bit of a poet since being a child and wrote short little romances in my teenage years so I’ve always fancied myself as an author.
My journey into erotic writing started with a dream that I had that just would not let me go. My husband suggested I wrote it down and then suggested I shared it with others. Well, once I took the plunge I found I couldn’t stop! The ideas started coming thick and fast and I became addicted to the feedback I got from posting my stories online and as a natural progression for that one day I saw a call for submissions and had a suitable story for it. I submitted the story and next thing I know I am a published erotic romance author.
Q. What are the most important components that go into making good erotic fiction?
Characters. It does not matter how hot the action is or how exotic the location is or how complex and thrilling the plot is if the reader does not engage with your characters they are not going to enjoy your story.
It is important to create well rounded characters, they need to feel real, so they will have fears and worries and hang ups, they might have a bad temper or be a bit of a push over but you need to add a little bit of a flaw to make your Characters real. Readers enjoy reading about people they think they could meet on the street one day. So when you settle down to write your masterpiece spend time working on your character as well as your plot.
Q. If you could have any celebrity pictured carrying one of your books who would you choose and why?
David Tennant, definitely. Why? Well, I’d get a wonderful thrill from thinking he’d read my work, I’d be even happier if it were an autographed copy of Curvaceous and I’d met him and signed his copy for him. Also he’s hot property right now, everyone loves him and everyone is mourning his passing as Dr Who. It’d be great publicity for me!
Q. What does your working day typically consist of?
I am a full time mum and a part time writer. My day starts around 5.30am when I check my email and look at my facebook (http://www.facebook.com/victoriablisse) and twitter (http://www.twitter.com/victoriablisse) and pootle about online for half an hour or so. Then I open the story I’m currently working on and write until about 7.30 when I wake up my 8 year old daughter and get her ready for school.
Through the day you will probably find me at the shops, doing housework, baking and cooking but if I am on a deadline I may well try and fit some more writing in through the day. I pick my daughter up at 3pm and until 7pm when she goes to bed I’m busy with her and my husband and feeding them both. In the evening is when I write my blog posts (http://www.victoriablisse.co.uk/blog) (http://cuisinelingus.blogspot.com ) and promotional bits and pieces. I’ll watch a bit of telly, read a little then you’ll find me in bed by 10pm most nights. I’m definitely a morning person.
Q. How do people who don’t know you react when you tell them you’re an erotic author?
I’ve never had anyone be particularly surprised but then most people I don’t know so well are meeting me because I am an erotic romance author. Friends from my school days find it quite fascinating because I was a shy, retiring geek back in school and an active Christian (I still am!) and people find that combination of erotica writer and Christian a strange one to get their head around.
Q. What makes you laugh?
Oh, lots of things. I love my daughter’s unique perspective on the world, she always makes me laugh. I love jokes, the cheesier the better as I’ve been exposed to them from a young age with my Dad. I love a bit of slapstick like in Mr Bean, Laurel and Hardy and the like and I am a woman of the Friends generation, I love to watch old episodes now and then. Nowadays I love The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother (a friend of mine IS Barney Stinson, I swear he is) and community. A beautiful sunset will make me laugh, a delicate daffodil in full bloom, the feel of the wind on my face as I stand on a hill. The sheer pleasure of life and the beauty of the world I live in makes me laugh because I feel light and happy inside.
Q. What three words would your friends use to describe you?
Hmm, well these are the ones I’d hope they’d say but I suspect daft, mad and completely bonkers may be closer to the mark!
I think they would say that I am kind, thoughtful and positive.
Q. What’s the best thing that has happened to you in the last 12 months?
Oh, lots of good things happen to me, I mean I wake up every morning, that’s a great start! My husband’s nasal surgery that he’s been waiting a long time for was definitely one of the highlights of the last twelve months. It’s good to see him coming back towards good health. Also on a more frivolous level my mum, my daughter and I went to Disneyland Paris for her 50th Birthday last August and that was a delightful and magical experience indeed.
Q. Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us?
I think I’ve done that already with telling you I’m a Christian! I go to church each week and sing in the church choir (if you’ve heard my singing voice that will surprise you) and I am very comfortable with writing erotica, my faith does not clash with my writing at all. Some other Christians may disagree with that, but that is their prerogative. I’ve had a word with the guy in charge and I’ve had nothing but encouragement in my career as an erotic romance author.
Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
It’s better out than in.
It’s something my mum says a lot and it relates to many things in life. When you have a cold, the mucus (ewwww) is much better out than in. When you have a splinter, you want it out and when you’re upset you’ve got to let the tears fall because it’s always better out than in. Great advice for living a happy life.
