Rude Words

for readers and writers of erotic fiction

Author interview with Kat Black

Interview with Kat Black
Q. What was your childhood ambition?
I have a vague memory that my very first ambition was to be a princess – what can I say, I was born a delusional romantic. I’ll let you guess how well I did with achieving that aim but let’s just say that luckily I always had a back-up plan. To be a writer.
Q. How did you end up being an erotic writer?
From years of being an avid erotic reader. I don’t believe that in any genre you can be successful at the latter without having been dedicated to the former.
Q. What are the most important components that go into making good erotic fiction?
Tension. Passion. Intensity.
Q. What does your working day typically consist of?
I try and start each morning with some exercise because writers’ bum is not a pretty thing to live with. Then it’s straight onto the main task of the day: Procrastination! The curse of writers everywhere. Unless I literally shut myself away in a room, I fall prey to endless distractions and chores I didn’t even know needed doing.
Q. And what aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?
That initial creative blast; when a story blossoms to life in my head and I get to experience the excitement and newness of it all. After that, it becomes a love/hate relationship, as I fuss with rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation. As hard as it can be, though, I wouldn’t change a moment of the process.
Q. What makes you laugh?
Pretty much anything, up to and including things that really aren’t supposed to be funny. Unfortunately, the more inappropriate, the louder my guffawing seal bark of a laugh becomes.
Q. IPhone or Blackberry? Or neither?
Good God, neither. Don’t need any more distractions.
Q. What three words would your friends use to describe you
When I’m writing to a deadline: boring, neglectful, invisible… and when I’m not: boring, loyal, bossy.
Q. What’s the best thing that has happened to you in the last 12 months?
Having my first two short stories published!
Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Exercise your pelvic floor!
