Rude Words

for readers and writers of erotic fiction

Author interview with Charlotte Stein

Author interview with Charlotte Stein

Q. What was your childhood ambition?

To be able to fly. Then to marry Steve Guttenberg. Then to be one of The A-Team. Then to be a writer. The writer one stuck. The others kind of didn’t pan out. Steve still calls, however.

Q. What ambitions do you still have?

To continue being a writer. Just always to continue. Like, if my arm fell off- I would hope I could attach some sort of device in order to continue typing two handed. A fake arm, a long stick- anything really.

And also if the places I publish at and want to publish at could continue to exist and also one day maybe like me - in the case of the latter - that would be awesome.

Q. What was your first job?

Cleaner at a school. That weirdly makes me sound like I started my life backwards. I was an old lady, first, like Benjamin Button only not a crap film.

Q. How did you end up being an erotic writer?

By being a fan of Black Lace. At first I wanted to be a horror writer, and then I realised a) I read Black Lace erotica more than most other types of book and b) most of my horror efforts were about two people, gradually progressing towards getting it on.

Q. What are the most important components that go into making  good erotic fiction?

Build up of tension, tension and progression within the actual sex itself, a love of the genre, a lack of squeamishness. Don’t just slap a one page sex scene on your sci-fi epic and call it erotic fiction.

Q. If you could have any celebrity pictured carrying one of your books who would you choose and why?

Well, I would go with Zachary Quinto. Because he is made of sex. However, seeing him carrying a copy of my book would only make me die of mortification. I hope he never knows that most of my heroes wear something that closely resembles his face (though not in a Silence of the Lambs sort of way, promise).

Q. What does your working day typically consist of?

Eating black jellybeans and writing until my laptop burns my legs. Then I watch some rubbish sitcom. Then I do more writing. Then I fall asleep and everything I’ve piled on my bed throughout my working night crashes to the ground. Sometimes there are jellybeans, everywhere. And one time, houmous.

In my working days, I teach at a local college.

Q. And what aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?

The jellybeans. And the hot dudes.

Q. How do people who don’t know you react when you tell them you’re an erotic author?

Their mouths make a small O and then they laugh. I’ve not met anyone yet who’s tried to beat me up or told me I’m going to burn in hell. Then I could make a small O and laugh.

Q. How do you like to relax when you’re not at work?

By writing more and watching yet another rubbish sitcom. Something with a fat ugly husband and his model wife is ideal. Sometimes I play Mario on my DS.

Q. What makes you laugh?

Feet. Anything to do with feet. And shoes coming off.

Q. What makes you cross?

Spam emails that prey on the elderly and the daft. Random rudeness to strangers. The Daily Mail.

Q. What subject do you know more about than anyone else?

I think I’m good with the following topics: film (especially horror, sci-fi, fantasy), contemporary erotica and erotic romance, some areas of publishing and writing skills in general (I teach creative writing). But I certainly don’t know more about them than anyone else.

Q. What’s the best present you’ve ever been given?

A region one DVD player and a copy of Donnie Darko. I wanted to see that film so badly, and my hubby went completely out of his way and his comfort zone to get those things, when they weren’t widely available. It was a total surprise. And I know it sounds pathetic and not like “a diamond as big as my fist”, but it meant a lot to me.

Q. IPhone or Blackberry? Or neither?

Neither.

Q. What do you think is your best attribute?

I have no idea. I worry a lot about other people’s feelings, which causes me a lot of anxiety, but I hate it when people don’t care about said same thing.

Q. What three words would your friends use to describe you

Weird. Neurotic. Clumsy.

Q. What’s the best thing that has happened to you in the last 12 months?

I can’t say. With writing, a lot of awesome things happen that you can’t talk about. Yet.

Q. Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us?

I actually am married to Steve Guttenberg.

Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Go for it.

  1. So even though I found it a bit cramped I used this kind of desk at home for the longest time simply because whenever I needed to buy a desk this is what I automatically thought of. Ill cover this in the post on how to use your desktop..Integrating the Drawer Units. No matter what your configuration there are actually two components that you need to have the desk itself and the drawer unit s ..Many desk units come with the drawers built in. Its that now when we do handle paper there is usually an electronic component to it as well whether that means checking out a website or adding something to a to-do list because of what you came across in the physical mail..So we dont have the end of paper but we do have the end of dealing with paper alone.
