Author Interview with Les Hansom
An interview with Les Hansom – author of Nothing Without a Woman
Q. What was your first job?
I was a mechanic working on trucks and vans. This is when I used to get my hands physically dirty.
Q. What are the most important components that go into making good erotic fiction?
In my opinion (and this will be questioned by many) good erotica needs to be pretty real, and not full of flowery, nonsensical rubbish like the type you’d find in the pages of D. H. Lawrence’s work. This was all right in late 19th, early 20th century but it has no place now. Nor should erotica be something out of a James Bond movie. I enjoy the humour and reality of sex.
Q. What does your working day typically consist of?
I write adult content for websites so my typical day would be writing various adult stories, articles and blog posts for website publication. I would take time off at lunch when I collect my daughter from pre-school, and then we come home, have sandwiches and watch Bargain Hunt on the TV.
Q. And what aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?
The diverse range of sexual niche content that I get to write. One day I can be writing stories about gay BDSM, the next day I can be covering foot fetish, another perhaps articles about glass dildos and butt plugs, and then perhaps if I’m really lucky I can start a story that I want to write.
Q. How do people who don’t know you react when you tell them you’re an erotic author?
I don’t generally tell people I’m an erotic author. Although I am very proud of my writing and my achievements, people can still be very negative and judgmental towards a man who writes erotica (or indeed anyone who does). I am not quite sure why the “pervert” label has been attached to the writer of erotica, but sadly it has, and I have small children whom I do not wish to take the brunt of my working life and hobbies; thus I keep my cards close to my chest. Perhaps when the world is able to embrace erotic fiction in the same way that we embrace shampoo, soap and cosmetics advertising then we can come out of the closet so to speak!
Q. How do you like to relax when you’re not at work?
I go out when I can with my children, and I also enjoy video games, reading, good food, movies and lots of sex as often as I can.
Q. What makes you cross?
Religion in general makes me cross, but I think people should be allowed to believe what they want. However, being shouted at in the street about how Jesus sacrificed himself for my sins is not alright! I don’t think that fanatical Christians should be allowed to yell about the bible and its teachings in the middle of the high street. I think that many people in this country would take great exception to other religions expressing their opinions out loud like this. And after all, in my opinion, the bible is a work of fiction, and I don’t go out screaming the teachings of Charles Dickens to I?
Q. IPhone or Blackberry? Or neither?
Neither. I loathe being contacted when I’m out and about. The whole idea of going out is to be away from the telephone in my opinion. We never switch off these days and it’s a constant source of stress for many people I know.
Q. What do you think is your best attribute?
I think my best attribute would be my ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. I can write a lot of words in a single day, and believe me this is very handy when writers are paid so poorly.
Q. What’s the best thing that has happened to you in the last 12 months?
The birth of my fourth child was the best thing to happen in the last 12 months. She arrived safely at home in my lounge with the help of a dedicated and very friendly ambulance crew!
