Rude Words

for readers and writers of erotic fiction

Author interview with Justine Elyot

Author interview with Justine Elyot

Q. What was your childhood ambition?

I had way too many of these, but writing was one of them. I’m still working on the operatic soprano career and mansion full of liveried servants.

Q. What ambitions do you still have?

All of the above ;) .

Q. What was your first job?

I had to lug a PA and microphone around the Sea Life Centre giving informative talks about the exhibits. I can still tell you anything you’d like to know about a bull huss or a gurnard. Gutting and cutting the heads off mackerel was also in the job description for some unpleasant reason.

Q. What are the most important components that go into making  good erotic fiction?

I like a style that’s clear and distinctive, strong characterisation and a build-up of tension. You have to have a climax.

Q. How do people who don’t know you react when you tell them you’re an erotic author?

They don’t. Because I don’t tell them.

Q. How do you like to relax when you’re not at work?

By writing erotica. Ha. It isn’t work to me really. I’m also addicted to Google Earth Streetview and like to spy on people I will never meet.

Q. What makes you laugh?

Charlotte Stein and Father Ted.

Q. What makes you cross?

Too many things. I should be more zen really. I do get a bit eyerolly at the Sex Negative crowd. God knows there are enough of them.

Q. What do you think is your best attribute?

I have mastered the art of taking each day as it comes, I think.

Q. Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us?

I never – literally never – swore until I was eighteen. I think I was well into my twenties before the c word got its first airing.
